Emily Melissa Mitchell is an accomplished musician and teacher. She is a native of Blackfoot, Idaho where she was raised in a very musical family. She began piano lessons at age 7 and flute at age 11. Two of Emily's first piano teachers were Mrs. Elaine Worley of Pocatello Idaho and Dr. Randy Earl of Idaho State University. She began flute in her 6th grade beginning band and after two years, began flute lessons with Mrs. Patricia George at Idaho State University and Brigham Young University-Idaho.
As a young musician, Emily participated in many solo and ensemble festivals in her area. Performing on both instruments, she received superior ratings and placings. She participated in the Eastern Idaho Regional Honor Band in 1998, attended 3 summers of ISU music camp and one summer at Sewanee Summer Music Camp in Sewanee, Tennessee. On piano, Emily was awarded the Certificate of Merit, after completing the requirements during her final year of high school. As a flutist, she had the privilege of participating in master classes with famous artists such as Jeff Weissman, Trevor Wye and William Bennett.
In 2001, Emily was accepted into the music program of Brigham Young University Idaho on scholarship. She continued her study on flute with Patricia George and pursued her bachelor's degree in Music Education. Emily had the opportunity to participate in the BYU-I Wind Ensemble, Chamber Winds, and BYU-Idaho Flute Choir while studying at BYU-Idaho. During her years of study, Emily enjoyed serving as principal flutist and touring with the BYU-Idaho Wind Ensemble. As a senior, she presented a senior recital on flute and then completed a semester of student teaching at Skyline High School with Robert Dumire of Idaho Falls. She graduated with her Bachelors in Music Education December of 2005.
Emily and her husband David Mitchell are proud parents of three wonderful boys. Between the tasks of mothering, Emily has found the time to participate in many musical ensembles and productions. She has played with the local flute choir of Pocatello, Idaho, Suite 212; Within Range, a flute quartet in Gillette Wyoming; and most recently, The Idaho Falls Flute Ensemble. Her symphonic experience includes positions held in both The Rexburg Tabernacle Orchestra of Rexburg Idaho and the Powder River Symphony Orchestra of Gillette Wyoming. Other ensembles of which she has played with include the Gillette Community Band and the Powder River Playhouse Orchestra, both in Gillette, Wyoming.
For the past 17 years, Emily has taught private flute and piano lessons. She and her family now reside in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Emily currently has the privilege of working as an Elementary Music Coordinator for Bonneville Joint School District 93. She loves her job teaching music in the elementary schools. Emily looks forward to teaching private flute and piano lessons in this community..
When asked why she became a music teacher, Emily states: “I believe music has a profound effect upon the soul. It lifts one up and inspires. I became a teacher to help inspire young people to reach for their dreams. I delight in seeing my students reach their goals to become more accomplished, polished individuals. Music is my passion. Teaching music to others is an even greater passion of mine. I hope you'll allow me to share this passion with you and your child.”
